Besties: Tonny and Bea have been friends for 77 years and text each other every morning

Tonny van der Kort (77) from Velserbroek and Bea Meier (77) from Haarlem have known each other all their lives. Since they are both widows, their friendship has deepened even more. “We do a lot together and text every morning after Bea fell in the bathroom,” Tonny says in the NH television program Besties. “Then you get a vision that it might happen again,” Bea adds, “and I wouldn’t be able to get up.”

Tonny and Bea grew up together in the Indische Buurt of Haarlem. Tonny: “I think our mothers came together with the prams. I was an only child and Bea came from a large family, so there was less personal attention there.” According to Bea, Tonny had more toys and that was the initial attraction.

Arguments

Back on the corner of Atjehstraat and Bankastraat, even more memories surface, such as the arguments they had with the residents of the house where they always kicked a ball against the wall and they also argued together. “We tore each other’s hair out,” Tonny admits, “but it always turned out okay.”

The friends cannot imagine life without each other. Their greatest fear is that one of them will die. “We are each other’s source of support. The last part of our lives alone would be difficult,” says Bea.
