Kora from Amsterdam and José from Alkmaar met 50 years ago at the Pius X Lyceum in Amsterdam. José says in the television program Besties: “When I entered the classroom, saw Kora sitting there and heard her talking, I immediately thought: I like that one, I want to sit next to that one. We laughed a bit together and made teachers despair. Everything was was not fun, we could soften it with humor.”
“It was a big hit,” Kora adds. “I think we were looking for a buddy to discuss everything that happened in our families and what you thought and felt as adolescent girls.” The friends never stopped talking. When they cycled home after a school day, they were already talking on the phone at home. And even after José moved to Alkmaar and Kora stayed in Amsterdam, the friendship continued.
Especially for Besties, José and Kora go back to the school where their friendship started 50 years ago. As soon as they sit in the school desks, the friends are in stitches again as if they were teenage girls. “Kora was regularly sent out of class because she had such a screeching laugh and an outburst,” says José.
They are celebrating their 50th anniversary this year with a weekend away on Texel.
