The state of Berlin is awarded the contract to monitor the wastewater for the corona virus.
Berlin has successfully applied as one of twenty nationwide pilot locations for the systematic monitoring of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater.
The measure is funded by three federal ministries with the help of EU funds.

“It’s great that Berlin was selected as the health location for this important federal project,” said Health Senator Ulrike Gote (56, Greens). “In this way, our city can make an active contribution to the development of a valuable and helpful tool in combating the pandemic.” The project will start in February. For the examination, the inflows from the three largest sewage treatment plants are regularly checked for the presence of SARS-CoV-2.
The aim is to identify trends and changes in the dynamics of infection at an early stage, including currently circulating virus variants.
