Berlin’s newest subway is being built here

Twelve yellow painted aluminum housings of the new J series are already being removed. A single car contains 24 kilometers of cable alone. The floor is new – no longer made of water-sensitive wood, but a durable aluminum sandwich floor.

What strikes you at first glance: the new subway has an escape door at the front (so far only available on the H series). “You can use them to evacuate to the front if a train gets stuck in the tunnel,” says project manager Vanessa Rittinger (37).

“The decisive factor is that public transport is more attractive – that encourages people to change,” said Transport Senator Bettina Jarasch (53) during a visit to the plant. She promised: “The first test vehicle will be delivered this year.”

In 2024 there will be many new trains on the rails. This enables a timetable revolution: the 5-minute interval is to be reduced to 3.3 minutes.

BVG board member Rolf Erfurt raves about the customer-friendliness: small-large seats with a 10 centimeter difference, grab bars instead of rubber loops, panorama window with a width of 1.80 meters. And 360-degree cameras ensure more security.
