The newly tailored department of Berlin’s Senator for Culture, Joe Chialo (CDU), can expect a slight increase in budgets over the next two budget years.

The draft budget presented by the Senate on Tuesday provides 947 million euros for the Senate Department for Culture and Social Cohesion in the coming year and a good one billion euros for 2025. As a department for culture and Europe, 924 million euros were available in the current budget.

There should be a plus of 13 (2024) and 26 (2025) million euros for tariff increases. Increases in minimum wages or lower fee limits were also mentioned. The number of cultural spaces owned by the state of currently around 2000 plus around 500 in development is to be doubled by the end of the 1920s.

The refurbishment of the Komische Oper, previously planned at almost 440 million euros, has also been re-assured.

Culture Senator Joe Chialo (CDU) sees the cultural scene in a tense situation. “The crisis that we are now fighting with lots and lots of money will take a while,” said the CDU politician to radio station Flux FM. It is important to prepare accordingly and to make cultural institutions more resistant to crises.
