Imagine having to raid your savings account to fund your lifestyle. After two years everything is gone – and then?

Cut back, that’s clear, because bad guys are forbidden (debt brake!). In the new black and red draft budget for 2024/2025 there are no orgies of cuts (yet), but they are lurking on the horizon. Of course, not a cent goes into paying off the 66 billion euro mountain of debt.

For the time being, the small grand coalition simply wants to keep the many campaign promises. From more social housing to better equipment for the police and fire brigade to the comeback of the 29-euro ticket, which alone consumes 655 million euros in a double budget. Understandable – but really right?

And then there will soon be a nice make-a-wish package. Five billion euros for everything that serves climate protection. Let’s see what’s behind it all.
