In the Berlin SPD there is growing resistance to the further construction of the A100 city motorway in the east of the capital.
The SPD state party conference on June 19 could pass a resolution calling for a planning freeze and a waiver of the 17th construction phase. There are several applications for this, including two identical ones from the SPD district associations in Mitte and Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg. The chances of acceptance are good: the majority of the applications committee recommended that one of the two applications be approved.
“The state must now take action to stop the project,” said the two SPD district chairmen in Mitte, Yannick Haan and Julia Plehnert, on Friday of the German Press Agency. The “Tagesspiegel” had previously reported.
The motions of both district associations state: “A city freeway is a traffic policy relic of the idea of a car-centric city that is in no way up-to-date.” And: “In times of climate change, the further construction of a freeway is the worst possible and most pointless signal.”
The Social Democratic members of the Senate and the Federal Government as well as the SPD deputies in the traffic committees of the House of Representatives and the Bundestag are called upon to campaign against the planning and construction of the 17th construction phase of the A100.
The FDP-led Federal Ministry of Transport announced at the end of March that it wanted to speed up planning for the section in question from Treptower Park in the direction of Lichtenberg to Storkower Straße. The Berlin Senate is against it: in the coalition agreement, the SPD, the Greens and the Left Party have agreed not to push ahead with the planning and construction of the 17th construction phase in the legislative period that runs until 2026.
In the past, however, there were also many supporters of the project in the SPD, and later a gradual change of heart began in the party. A clear party congress decision would be an expression of this development. The 16th construction phase of the A100 from Neukölln to Treptower Park is under construction and should be finished in 2024.
