Berlin implements mandatory vaccinations in hospitals and in care

Berlin wants to implement the nationwide corona vaccination requirement for employees in hospitals and care from March 16 “consistently but pragmatically”. This was announced by the health administration on Friday.

The good news is that the vaccination rate for Berlin employees in the health sector is significantly higher than for the general population. According to surveys, it is between 82 and 100 percent in hospitals and around 90 percent in the care sector.

By March 16, employees would have to prove to their employer that they are fully vaccinated against Corona or have recovered or cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons, the procedure said. They may not be employed without presenting appropriate proof.

According to the Infection Protection Act, employers must report unvaccinated employees from March 16th. In order to relieve the Berlin health authorities, the State Office for Health and Social Affairs (Lageso) is the corresponding central office. Here the data would first be checked for completeness and plausibility. This pre-sorting also serves to provide an overview of the city as a whole and to monitor any potential bottlenecks in care.

The state office then passes on the information – i.e. the general report on the vaccination situation and a possibly threatening “risk situation” in the care – to the health authorities of the districts. These should request missing evidence from the employees and provide vaccination advice and vaccination offers. They should also evaluate the “risk assessment” and can, if necessary, suspend a procedure on this basis for the time being.

If there is no risk of a threat to supply, the health authorities should initiate fine proceedings. Answering the question of whether, as a last resort, they would ban unvaccinated employees from entering or working is at the discretion of the health authorities, according to the health administration.
