Hundreds of refugees from Ukraine have already arrived in Berlin, and many of the capital’s residents are showing great support.
Berlin’s Governing Mayor Franziska Giffey (SPD) expects several thousand war refugees from Ukraine in the next few days and weeks.
“We are preparing for at least 20,000 people that we have to accommodate here in Berlin,” said the politician on Monday evening in the RBB “Abendschau”. The Berlin Senate is intensifying the search for accommodation, said Giffey.
There are also considerations to set up a bed exchange in which Berliners could offer sleeping places – the population shows a great willingness to help. “It’s about examining all the options that we have and making them viable as quickly as possible,” emphasized Giffey.
Hundreds of refugees from Ukraine have already arrived in Berlin. Giffey said the country’s arrival center for refugees in Reinickendorf is now full. Other people would be accommodated in Pankow in the evening and at night.
