In the second half of this year, restaurants, cafés and pubs can also serve guests in open spaces without having to pay extra fees.

As the Berlin Senate announced on Tuesday, district offices can waive the so-called special usage fee until the end of this year.

The regulation was introduced to support gastronomic businesses during the pandemic. Until then, fees had to be paid for setting up chairs or tables in the public areas in front of the restaurant.

“Of course, this waiver of the special usage fees for the rest of the year also means a contribution to the restart of the Berlin economy and the financial relief of the gastronomy,” said the Governing Mayor Franziska Giffey (SPD).

She pointed out that the Senate had launched a EUR 330 million restart program for the economic and cultural sectors that were particularly badly hit by Corona. The fee waiver for gastronomy is part of it.
