As of the third quarter of 2023, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Trust comprised a portfolio value of $38.9 billion – also qualifying for Form 13F filings with the SEC. The trust was set up to hold the assets of the Microsoft co-founder in 1999 Bill Gates to manage the foundation set up by his ex-wife Melinda. The nonprofit organization works to improve healthcare and access to education worldwide. The couple are now separated, but continue to run the nonprofit organization together.

The parcel service provider FedEx took tenth place in the Gates ranking in the third quarter of 2023 – just like in the previous quarter. The Gates Foundation also did not change the number of shares in the portfolio: the 1,534,362 shares of the UPS competitor from the second quarter of 2023 are still in the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Trust. On September 30, 2023, they were worth $406.483 million on the stock market, corresponding to 1.04 percent of all the former spouses’ holdings.

9th place: Walmart
Shares in the US retail chain Walmart narrowly missed eighth place in the Gates ranking in the third quarter of 2023. The foundation added 9,300 additional shares of the supermarket giant to its portfolio and now has 3,030,159 Walmart shares. As of the reporting date, the market value of the expanded holding amounted to $484.613 million, which corresponded to 1.25 percent of the trust.

8th place: Coca-Cola FEMSA
The Mexican Coca-Cola subsidiary Coca-Cola FEMSA was also in eighth place among the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Trust’s largest holdings in the third quarter of 2023. The philanthropists still held 6,214,719 banknotes from the bottler in their depot, which had a market value of 487.482 million US dollars. This corresponds to a share of 1.25 percent of the entire trust.

7th place: Ecolab
Even in seventh place, there were no changes in the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Trust’s portfolio in the last quarter. The 5,218,044 papers from water hygiene specialist Ecolab were not touched. In total, the holding was worth $883.936 million at the end of September, which corresponds to 2.27 percent of all positions in the Gates Trust.

6th place: Deere & Co.
The manufacturer of agricultural equipment Deere & Co. is still in sixth place in the Gates ranking with 3,917,693 shares, which the foundation did not shake in the last quarter. At the end of September, these had a market value of no less than 1.478 billion US dollars. This means that the titles of the tractor manufacturer, which is best known for its main brand John Deere, take up 3.80 percent of the entire portfolio of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Trust.

5th place: Caterpillar
The mechanical engineering company Caterpillar heralds the top 5 in the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Trust ranking. Here too, Bill and Melinda Gates kept their feet still and left the 7,353,614 shares unchanged in the third quarter of 2023. On the stock exchange, the stake was worth $2.008 billion as of the reporting date – 5.16 percent of the entire portfolio.

3rd place: Canadian National Railway
The shares of the Canadian railway company Canadian National Railway once again occupied third place in the Gates ranking. In the third quarter of 2023, the Gateses did not touch the position and retained all 54,826,786 shares of the company. As of the reporting date, Canadian National Railway shares were worth $5.939 billion on the stock exchange, which corresponds to a share of 15.26 percent of the total portfolio.

2nd place: Berkshire Hathaway B
There were no surprises in second place in the third quarter of 2023 either. Although the Gates Trust sold 2,613,252 Berkshire Hathaway B shares during the period under review, the company headed by investment legend Warren Buffett remains in second place in the ranking. There were 22,529,601 shares remaining, which were worth $7.892 billion at the end of September. This corresponded to 20.28 percent of the entire portfolio. Buffett was himself a trustee of the foundation until 2021. Since leaving office, he has continued to support the organization with a regular donation of B shares in his investment company, which have fewer voting rights compared to A shares.

In the third quarter of 2023, the foundation increased its portfolio by 21,500 Microsoft shares to a total of 39,286,170 shares.
