Berkshire Hathaway boss Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger praise Elon Musk – but warn against risky action

• Conflict between Musk and Buffett
• Song of praise at general meeting
• Musk still takes a riskier approach

Disagreements between Musk and Buffett

Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Berkshire Hathaway boss Warren Buffett have a great influence on the market, but have also clashed several times in the past. Musk once said, for example, that he considers the tasks of the “Oracle of Omaha” to be “super boring”. It was not until March 2023 that the head of the electric car manufacturer also commented on the Berkshire depot’s setup via Twitter with the words “Or he [Warren Buffet, Anm. d. Red.] could have simply invested in Tesla with a market capitalization of 200 million US dollars when he had the opportunity”. Most recently, however, the jack of all trades also found words of praise for the market veteran. He wrote on Twitter that Buffett took the job from US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen would certainly do better: “He could do it in less than an hour a week,” Musk said.

Praise at AGM

At the Berkshire Hathaway annual meeting, Buffett and Vice Chairman Charlie Munger also made unusually friendly comments about the Tesla boss. When asked by the audience if Munger still thinks Musk overestimates himself, the billionaire replied that while he still thinks so, he also thinks Musk has great talent. “He would not have achieved what he has achieved in life if he had not striven for unreasonably extreme goals,” Munger continued. “He likes taking on impossible tasks and completing them.”

On this point, Musk differs significantly from Munger and Buffett. “We’re different. Warren and I are looking for the easy job,” Munger continued. “We don’t want to fail that often.”

Buffett: “Brilliant guy”

Buffett himself also agreed with Munger’s assessment. “He’s a brilliant, brilliant guy,” Buffett praised the CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, Twitter & Co. “It’s a dedication to solving the impossible, and every once in a while he’ll pull it off,” Buffett continued. “But for me or Charlie it would be torture.” Although he sees Musk’s lifestyle critically, just as he doesn’t want to swap places with him, Musk “wouldn’t like to be in my skin,” according to the stock market expert.

Musk reacts to tweet

Musk himself responded to the warm words from Berkshire Hathaway leadership. “Thank you for the kind words from Warren and Charlie,” the entrepreneur wrote in response to a video clip of the AGM.

Maybe there will be a rapprochement between Musk and the Berkshire giants Buffett and Munger in the future.
