Steven Bergwijn does not want to say too much about the interest of Ajax, which tries again to bring the attacker from Tottenham Hotspur to the Johan Cruijff ArenA after the failed transfer last winter. According to The Telegraph a first offer for the Orange international has been rejected by the English club.
“I also read all those things, but I have not heard anything yet,” Bergwijn said on Friday after the 1-4 victory of the Orange over Belgium in the Nations League. “I’m now with the Dutch national team, so I just have to concentrate on that. And then we’ll see what the future brings me.”
The 24-year-old Bergwijn, who is still under contract with Tottenham until mid-2025, also did not want to say whether he sees Ajax as a good step in his career. It seems to be heading for a departure from Tottenham, where he barely got to play last season.
“Of course there is some uncertainty about what will happen to me. I will go to the club that is the best for my career.”
‘The trainer sets me up for that’
What is special is that despite a lack of match rhythm, Bergwijn has been performing at the Orange in recent months. On Friday against Belgium, he was the absolute star in the eyes of national coach Louis van Gaal, together with Frenkie de Jong. Bergwijn made the 0-1 after forty minutes in the King Baudouin Stadium.
“The trainer puts me up for that,” said Bergwijn. “Here I get the confidence of the trainer. That is very nice and you can see that things are going well. That applies to the entire team by the way.”
Van Gaal was also aware of the rumors about a transfer from Bergwijn to Ajax. “Bergwijn will probably go to another club,” he said at his press conference after the win over Belgium in Brussels.
