Ajax has won tonight in the Eredivisie on a visit to RKC. The team from Amsterdam had a hard time, especially in the first half, but thanks to two goals from both Brian Brobbey and Steven Berghuis, it eventually became a sovereign victory. It was 4-1 for Ajax in Waalwijk.
Ajax started with the same eleven names as a week earlier against Excelsior and had a very difficult time against RKC in the opening phase. The home side even had the biggest chances and seemed to take the lead early on. Michel Kramer, who scored five times against Ajax in his career, knocked the ball nicely over Remko Pasveer into the goal. However, the former striker of FC Volendam was offside by a few centimeters and so the party for RKC was canceled.
RKC has the upper hand
Yet it was the team from Amsterdam who took the lead after 22 minutes. Steven Bergwijn put the ball back to Steven Berghuis, who was eagerly waiting on the edge of the penalty area. Berghuis’s shot was slightly touched so that RKC goalkeeper Vaessen had no chance. Despite the opening goal, the Waalwijkers continued to dominate and were paid just before half-time after work when former Ajax player Pelle Clement scored the deserved equalizer on Kramer’s pass. As a result, both teams went to the changing rooms at the halftime score of 1-1.

After tea, Ajax came out of the dressing rooms strong and put pressure on the RKC. Unlike the first half, Ajax now had the initiative and took the lead again eight minutes after the break. Berghuis got the ball in front of his feet in the sixteen and was devastating. The ball sailed into the goal behind the hopeless goalkeeper Vaessen. It was Berghuis’ fifth league goal of the season and his second of the evening.
Brobbey makes decision
RKC was no longer able to turn the tide and Ajax ran out to 1-3 thanks to Brian Brobbey. The striker used his body well to keep his direct opponent off the ball and then shot in through the goalkeeper’s legs. The same Brobbey was also the final station at Ajax’s fourth. Brobbey was put alone in front of the goalkeeper by Berghuis and scored his second goal of the game. In the final minutes, no more goals were scored and so it remained at 1-4 for Ajax.
Thanks to the win, Ajax is also the leader of the Eredivisie after this round. Alfred Schreuder’s team now has 28 points from eleven games. Ajax will play again next Wednesday. Then Liverpool will visit Amsterdam as part of the Champions League.
Ajax setup: feather; Sanchez, Timber, Blind (Windal/46), Bassey; Álvarez (Grillitsch/46), Berghuis, Klaassen (Conceição/86); Tadic, Brobbey (Kudus/83), Bergwijn (Lucca/83)
