The Berlin techno club Berghain is known far beyond the capital. Not only the strictness of the bouncers is legendary in the club scene, the British magazine “DJ Mag” has repeatedly voted it into the top ten of the best clubs worldwide. But now it could be over: According to rumors, the club could close this year.

There is no official statement from the owners yet. That “Faze Magazine” but quotes an anonymous insider who is said to be well connected in the scene. “The Berghain is closing forever! The final end will come this year!” he writes. The club’s booking agency, Ostgut Booking, had already closed at the beginning of October. Since then there have been rumors that it could soon be over with the club as well.

Tired of going to Berghain?

When it comes to the much-discussed death of clubs in big cities, property owners with other plans are often behind it. As the insider writes, the operators of Berghain are said to simply not want to: “One of the founders has already had himself paid out and is said to be staying in the countryside in Brandenburg, the others simply ‘don’t feel like it’ anymore and have other life plans in the Head.”

Apparently, the operators are not planning to keep Berghain alive by selling it or passing it on, as the insider writes. “Apparently this is not desirable. Continuing to exist as an art location does not appear to be an option. And so this chapter should finally be closed.”

Berghain was founded in 2004, but goes back to the Ostgut techno club, which has existed since the 1990s. The club is located in Berlin-Friedrichshain in the building of a former thermal power station. In 2011, the operators bought the extensively renovated building from Vattenfall. It is not known what will happen to the location if it is actually closed.
