Bergers are ready on Friday at the Moerdijk Bridge because of the heavy storm Eunice that is moving over the country. “That strong wind is very dangerous,” says Arthur Kerstens. “Should things go wrong in traffic, we will be quick to clear the road again.”
Wind speeds of 141 kilometers per hour have been measured along the coast, and then the center of gravity of the storm has yet to come. There is also a lot going on in Brabant, where code orange applies. Reports of storm damage are coming in from across the province.
“Dangerous situations can arise, especially on bridges,” says Arthur, an employee of a salvage company. “One strong gust of wind is enough to unbalance a truck.”
Three trucks overturned
Not much later, a truck on the A16 overturns near the bridge because of the strong wind, followed by a second and a third. The highway in the direction from Rotterdam to Breda is therefore closed in both directions, the ANWB reports.
Earlier in the afternoon, the bridge section on which traffic can drive from Dordrecht to Breda was already closed.
