Bergen beer brewers are popular: “Already won five prizes”

Four friends from Bergen started a brewery over a year ago and it is going very well. They have already won several awards and recently added two more. That happened during the European Beer Challenge. “This already after a year of brewing, we are very proud of it”, says brewer Dustin Paul.

Dustin brought the group together, inspired by the German beer culture they started their company ‘Stoked’. “In every regional region in Germany you have a different distinct lager beer, I would like to make that for this region as well,” says Dustin. He has been working on the recipe for his unfiltered lager for a year and a half and he is very happy with the gold recognition of the European Beer Challenge.

According to Pieter Vader, the beer is a specialty beer, just not as we are used to it in the Netherlands. “It’s actually just a beer, only special,” explains Pieter. He continues: “There are many possibilities with lager that we do not know in the Netherlands. That is why it is so nice that we have this.”

The beer that was recognized with silver also has its origin in Germany. “The Zoigl stems from an old German brewing tradition,” says Pieter. In this tradition, villages used to brew beer together and residents were allowed to take the barrel home to let it ferment from there.

“When the beer was ready, the resident hung a pull on his Zoigl plate and so the rest of the village knew they could drink beer there,” explains Pieter. Now it is not the case that people can get a keg of beer at Stoked, but the beer is brewed in the same traditional way.

Woodland festival

Selling the beer locally has been going well for the boys so far. “We will soon have a bar at the Woodland Festival, which is 300 meters away,” Pieter shouts cheerfully. The men are busy building a special bar for the festival.
