BER Airport needs a strong economy

Berlin once again has a direct flight connection with the USA – but probably only for a short time. More incentives are needed. A comment from BZ editor Stefan Peter.

Frankfurt Airport is not the prettiest in Germany, but it is the one with the most connections: 300 destinations can be reached non-stop from the Main metropolis. At 140, it is not even half of BER.

Local politicians and Berliners want more, it won’t be easy. Nobody needs to rely on Lufthansa – they only have Frankfurt and Munich in mind. But even foreign airlines do not automatically fly to BER.

Berlin lacks economic power – only business class passengers can make a long-haul flight profitable with their expensive tickets. Kai Wegner knows that too – the Governing Mayor is therefore counting on the settlement of new companies. That’s right!
