The semi-final first leg of the League Cup between Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool FC was overshadowed by a medical emergency. After just six minutes, Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur remained motionless on the ground.
The game was just under six minutes old when Tottenham were awarded a corner. Bentancur went towards the ball and attempted a diving header, but he missed the ball. The 27-year-old then landed first with his right shoulder and then with his head on the grass.
Bentancur briefly moves his legs back and forth before lying motionless with his arms outstretched. After the ball landed in the goal a short time later, several teammates rushed to him. Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson also went to Bentancur and signaled for medical help with hand signals. Medical staff ran onto the field with a slight delay.
The stadium then became quiet. Support staff looked after Bentancur and carried him off the pitch on a stretcher after an eleven-minute break. Pictures showed that the Uruguayan international had received a ventilator. The audience applauded. Brennan Johnson came into the game to replace him. At that point it was 0-0.
Shortly afterwards there was a first update from Tottenham: “We can confirm that Rodrigo is conscious and able to speak. He will be taken to hospital for further examinations,” the club wrote on the X platform.
