Show of honor via T-shirt cover song spinning top. The legendary giant festival in Glastonbury, England always means – in addition to the concert performances, of course – that the stars and starlets are always on display. Last weekend, David Grohl expressed his admiration for ABBA with a simple t-shirt, on which the Swedes’ band logo can be seen.
Snapshots have been posted on various social platforms showing the Foos frontman backstage with ABBA flocking. Meanwhile, Grohl’s guest appearance with birthday headliner Paul McCartney, who performed on the Pyramid Stage on Saturday (June 25), provided an even bigger hello. Grohl again in black thread, with the golden-yellow ABBA lettering on it.
An answer was not long in coming. ABBA’s Benny Andersson responds to Grohl’s textile message with a cover of the Foo Fighters song “Learn To Fly”. Anderson presents a piano cover version of the same song on his account.
In a video posted to the Instagram account and also to the web channel ABBA Voyage the day before yesterday (June 28), Andersson can be seen playing a short plinker-plonker version of Learn To Fly . Incidentally, the Swedish doyen wears a Foo Fighters shirt during this campaign.
This ping-pong game is by no means a cheap rush job. Dave Grohl has repeatedly confessed his love for ABBA in podcasts and interviews over the past few years. He even said last September that he was open to the idea of playing drums in the band, meaning ABBA, of course.
In Glastonbury, Grohl sang The Beatles’ “I Saw Her Standing There” and The Wings’ “Band On The Run” with Paul McCartney. McCartney found warm words for the fact that the colleague came to Worthy Farm especially for this.
“This guy flew in especially for this,” McCartney reported, not sparing the flight cancellations from Los Angeles, which Grohl nevertheless overcame to make it in time for the UK festival appearance. It was Grohl’s first time on a concert stage since the death of his Foo Fighters bandmate Taylor Hawkins (March 2022).
