Benfica shoots down RB Salzburg in Youth League final

Benfica’s youth footballers have won the UEFA Youth League for the first time.

The Portuguese defeated RB Salzburg 6-0 (2-0) in a one-sided final on Monday evening and took revenge for the defeat in the final five years ago (1-2) with the goal festival.

Henrique Araujo (15’/58’/89′, penalty kicks) from the hat-trick, as well as Martim Neto (2′), Cher Ndour (53′) and Luis Semedo (69′) scored at the Colovray Stadium in the shadow of UEFA’s headquarters in Nyon the goals for the team coached by Luis Castro. It was the clearest final result in the history of the competition. The game was directed by the German referee Harm Osmers (Hannover).

With 70 games now, Benfica is the record-breaking team in the Youth League, in which a European champion of young professionals under 19 years of age has been crowned since the 2013/14 season. The youth of the traditional club was in the final for the fourth time.

From a German perspective, Borussia Dortmund’s U19s have been the most successful this season. The BVB offspring failed in the quarter-finals at Atletico Madrid. Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig and VfL Wolfsburg were eliminated with their selections in the group phase. A German team has never won the Youth League.
