In the previous round, AZ eliminated the Italian Lazio. In the quarterfinals it was too strong for Anderlecht over two matches. After a 2-0 loss in Brussels, it also became 2-0 in Alkmaar thanks to a whirlwind in the first half. Penalty kicks therefore had to bring the decision. “I still have to realize it all”, said Pantelis Hatzidiakos after the match.
The central defender criticized the attitude of the Belgians afterwards. According to him, they spoke quite arrogant words towards the decisive game. “They had some talk,” said the Greek. “They motivated us by belittling us.”
