Two teams scientists have independently realized a breakthrough in the fight against HIV, still one of the deadliest infectious diseases in the world. In one corner you have the Dutch, who developed a vaccine that the immune system can possibly be ‘learn to attack the virus’. In the other there are the Flemish of KU Leuven, who bumped into a method to make the virus particles permanently harmless. Together they can save millions of lives in the long term, if everything goes well. HLN science expert Martijn Peters explains: “This is hopeful and important.”
