Belgian fishermen achieved more turnover from less fish

That turnover increased by 7.8 percent compared to 2020. This is mainly due to the higher fish price. Last year it was an average of 5.10 euros per kilo, 13.3 percent higher than in 2020. In that year, as a result of the corona pandemic, both exports and sales to local markets and the catering industry were severely disrupted.

More than half of the fish was landed and sold in the port of Zeebrugge, followed by the port of Ostend. The share of the port of Nieuwpoort remains rather limited at 2.4 percent of the total.

Tongue and plaice

Sole remains the most important fish species for Belgian sea fishing. Half of the total catch therefore concerns sole. Plaice is second in the ranking, although the supply fell by just over 7 percent in 2021. But the better price also ensured that turnover was maintained with this fish, just as with sole. Finally, the supply of rye fell in particular, by 17 percent, but the price also recovered here.
