Belgian cyclist Nathan Van Hooydonck has been in an artificial coma since Tuesday after a serious car accident. That report several Dutch and Belgian media. 27-year-old Van Hooydonck became unwell behind the wheel in Kalmthout, Belgium, on Tuesday morning and subsequently collided with a number of other cars.
Van Hooydonck is said to have suffered a cardiac arrest while driving. Emergency services then reportedly resuscitated him. According to Sporza, doctors found no damage to his heart or brain. The Belgian Sporza reports that the situation is “hopeful”, they write based on Hooydonck’s environment.
Van Hooydonck’s heavily pregnant wife was also in the car, according to Belgian media she was not injured and was only taken to hospital for a check-up. Other motorists involved in the accident were also not injured. Van Hooydonck was recently active for the Dutch cycling team Jumbo-Visma in the Tour of Britain and would ride in the European Cycling Championships in the Netherlands next week.
