Belgian alpinist (61) died after glacier fall in Switzerland | Interior

The alpinist who lost his life last week in a mountain accident on the Dufourspitze in Switzerland turns out to be Belgian. This has been announced by the police of the canton of Valais.

It concerns a 61-year-old Belgian who lives in the Swiss canton of Vaud. His body was spotted by some climbers on the Border Glacier near the village of Zermatt on Wednesday morning. Emergency services arrived too late to save him.

“He probably only walked from the Grenzgipfel towards the Grenzsattel,” the police said in an initial statement on Friday.

The man fell about 200 meters down the southwest side of the ridge, at an altitude of about 4,500 meters. The local Public Prosecution Service has launched an investigation.
