Munich (dpa) – At FC Bayern Munich, all football professionals, coaches, supervisors and the closest staff around the team underwent a corona test on the Monday before the planned start of training in the afternoon.
After five holiday corona cases involving captain Manuel Neuer, those responsible for the autumn champion are now eagerly awaiting the results of the PCR tests. At 4 p.m. the first – non-public – exercise unit in the new year is to take place on the club’s premises, as confirmed by the club upon request.
Coach Julian Nagelsmann, sports director Hasan Salihamidzic and the professionals around national player Joshua Kimmich, who is burning for his comeback after his long corona break with subsequent lung problems, drove up to the club premises in their company cars in the morning and had themselves tested in the underground car park. All players with a negative result should later start preparing for the start of the second half of the season in the Bundesliga against Borussia Mönchengladbach on Friday.
Nagelsmann had to postpone the start of training by one day after the record champions reported several corona cases on New Year’s. In addition to national goalkeeper Neuer (Maldives), Kingsley Coman (Dubai), Corentin Tolisso (France), the Englishman Omar Richards and assistant coach Dino Toppmöller tested positive during their vacation.
The quintet is in quarantine and will miss the first training sessions in the new year. It is unclear whether the players have been infected with the Omikron variant and will therefore definitely be absent against Glabdach. Since captain Neuer himself had reported slight symptoms, he will certainly be absent against Gladbach.
