Before the start of the season: 2nd Bundesliga – favourites, schedule, TV and audio times

Status: 07/12/2022 2:27 p.m

New kick-off times, a long winter break and two world champions: the most important information about the start of the second Bundesliga season.

The game plan

The league starts the new season with the game between 1. FC Kaiserslautern and Hannover 96 next Friday, July 15, at 8:30 p.m. (live ticker on sportschau.de). The winter break is unusually long because of the World Cup in Qatar. After the end of the 17th matchday on November 13th, it will take two and a half months until the second half of the season begins on January 27th, 2023. The 34th and final matchday is scheduled for May 28th.

the teams

Two A-celebrities of German football have moved on to the Bundesliga, but even without Schalke 04 and Werder Bremen the 2nd division has exciting clubs to offer. The biggest name is Hamburger SV, which is going into its fifth year in the second division and most recently failed in the relegation to Hertha BSC.

Also rich in tradition and ambitious are 1. FC Nuremberg, FC St. Pauli, Fortuna Düsseldorf, Hannover 96 and Greuther Fürth and Arminia Bielefeld, who have been relegated. Enrichment also comes from the 3rd division: 1. FC Magdeburg, Eintracht Braunschweig and 1. FC Kaiserslautern bring large fan bases with them.

Here you will find the team checks for the second division teams.

The world champions

Ron-Robert Zieler and Erik Durm won the World Cup with the German national team in 2014 – now they are competing in the second division. As captain, Zieler guards the goal of Hannover 96 – for him it is already the third second division year – and Durm is the king transfer from promoted Kaiserslautern. The 30-year-old right-back brings with him the experience of 101 Bundesliga games and 27 Premier League games.

The evergreens

The former Bundesliga Dino Hamburger SV is already in its fifth season in the lower house, but is by no means the longest-serving club there. That is city rivals FC St. Pauli with their twelfth second division season in a row, followed by SV Sandhausen (11).

The kick-off times

What is new is that the games on Saturday afternoon have been brought forward by half an hour after just one season. Kick-off is now at 1 p.m. to have more time for Bundesliga games.

Friday, 6.30 p.m. (two games)
Saturday, 1 p.m. (three games)
