Before the Olympics: Basketball world champions test against USA

As of: December 12, 2023 5:45 p.m

The German basketball players will compete again against the star ensemble from the USA in the 2024 Olympic year. The duel will take place immediately before the Olympic Games on July 22nd (8 p.m.) at the O2 Arena in London, as both associations announced on Tuesday.

It is a few days before the Olympic basketball tournament, which will take place from July 27th to August 11th in Lille and Paris, where the Olympic champion and the world champion will meet. At the World Cup in Manila, Germany surprisingly won a thrilling semi-final with 113:111.

Gordon Herbert: “A perfect indicator for us”

National coach Gordon Herbert said: “This is a great opportunity to play against the USA right before the Olympics. A final warm-up by playing against probably the biggest favorites for the Olympics. It’s a perfect benchmark for us.”

Even before the World Cup in Asia, the Germans had completed their last test against the USA. In Abu Dhabi, despite a clear lead, there was a 91:99 defeat. The US meets South Sudan two days earlier in London.

Another test against France

Before the Olympics, Germany is testing not only against the USA, but also against hosts France, who are planning to have super talent Victor Wembanyama take part. The game is scheduled for July 6th (4 p.m.) in Cologne. By winning their own World Cup title, head coach Herbert’s team avoids one of the qualifying tournaments. Slovenia and Greece will meet in one of the four tournaments. This means that either Slovenia’s star Luka Doncic or Greece’s model player Giannis Antetokounmpo will not take part in the Olympics in Paris.
