Before the final against the Netherlands: Ice-cold penalty taker Gwinn – “I’ve never missed before”

As of: February 26, 2024 7:31 p.m

In the decisive game for the women’s national team’s Olympic ticket, Giulia Gwinn’s penalty-taking accuracy could also be important. The 24-year-old benefits from her friend’s tips.

National soccer player Giulia Gwinn also owes her confidence when converting penalties to her partner Constantin Frommann. “I have a friend at home who is a former goalkeeper. He can give very good tips about what it’s like on the opposite side,” said the national player from FC Bayern Munich at a DFB press conference on Monday (February 26, 2024) in Lyon.

Frommann played for a long time at SC Freiburg in his youth, most recently at SV Meppen until 2022 and then had to end his career due to injury. In addition, the now 25-year-old was once a youth national player in various age groups.

Gwinn scored again from a penalty in the 2-1 defeat in the German women’s Nations League game against France last Friday in Lyon.

Never missed a penalty

“I haven’t missed a penalty in my career, at least in competitive games, which makes me personally feel good.”explained the legal defender. “I choose a corner beforehand. I don’t really get involved with the goalkeeper at that moment. I stick to myself.”

Her statement in the ARD interview after the lost game against France last Friday that the German women had played a little scary football was, according to her own statement, not taken lightly.

Every player has to “take charge”

“It was perhaps harshly worded. I was still a bit emotionally charged,” explained the legal defender. Basically, their public criticism was shared internally: “I think everyone – at least those I spoke to – saw it that way.” Every player can do it “We’ll have to take it upon ourselves because we simply didn’t show what we’re capable of in the first half.”

The German national team with regular player Gwinn has the last chance to win their ticket to the Olympic Games in Paris (July 26th to August 11th) against the Netherlands on Wednesday (8:45 p.m.) in Heerenveen.
