In view of the drastically rising cost of living and fuel prices in England, national soccer player Fran Kirby hopes to give people some distraction in the EM semi-finals.

“As much as we want to win, we also want to put a smile on people’s faces,” said Kirby before her Lionesses’ game in Sheffield against the Swedes (ARD/9 p.m.). “If they turn on the TV, hopefully we can give them a 90-minute escape from the daily grind so they can cheer and see how passionately we play for this country,” said Kirby, 29. “Hopefully it makes them a little bit proud and they can switch off from everything else that’s going on.”

England have not reached the final of a major tournament since 2009. In 2015, 2017 and 2019, the Lionesses were eliminated in the semifinals. Chelsea striker Kirby hopes it will finally work on Tuesday. “If we can win the semi-finals and get to the final then it will be incredible for the people of this country that they have something to celebrate and enjoy.”
