Before the BVB game: 19 corona cases at 1. FSV Mainz 05, football | Bundesliga – SWR – Regional

No decision on the upcoming game against Dortmund

The players who tested negative completed individual training on Thursday. The people of Rhineland-Palatinate are in close contact with the Mainz health department and the German Football League (DFL) regarding how to proceed. In addition, the club asked for their understanding not to provide any further information beyond this message for the time being.

Coach Bo Svensson’s team will play against Borussia Dortmund next Sunday (3:30 p.m.). Sebastian Kehl (Head of the Licensed Players Department at BVB) commented on the situation on Thursday afternoon: “We will continue to prepare professionally for the match. As of now, we are assuming that the game can take place next Sunday.” According to the DFL rules of the game, a club can only apply for a match to be dismissed under the current regulations if fewer than 16 players (including amateurs who are eligible to play) are available.

A corona outbreak near Mainz before the start of the season

For Mainz, the short-term corona problem is not a new situation: the club had just before the start of the season last August eleven infections in the ranks of professionals to complain about. The game against runners-up RB Leipzig, also on the following Sunday, took place anyway – and Mainz won 1-0.
