The development of former Union defender Nico Schlotterbeck also impressed his former Berlin coach Urs Fischer.
“He’s playing it very solidly. He’s a young player who’s trying to learn, but also has his own opinion,” said Fischer before meeting again on Sunday (5:30 p.m. / DAZN) with Schlotterbeck, who now plays for Borussia Dortmund.
The 22-year-old had played for Union on loan from SC Freiburg in the 2020/21 season. After a successful season in Köpenick, he returned to Breisgau and made it into the national team there. Schlotterbeck has excellent chances of being nominated for the World Cup in a few weeks in Qatar.
The move to Borussia Dortmund pushed Schlotterbeck again, said Fischer. “The mix is right. With his teammates Mats Hummels and Niklas Süle, he can get a lot going,” said the Swiss.
