Before announcement: Giménez hints at move to Feyenoord

Mexico international

Santiago Giménez is moving to Feyenoord Rotterdam from the Mexican first division club CD Cruz Azul. According to consistent media reports, the 21-year-old striker has signed a contract with the Eredivisie club. While the fan portal “1908.nl“ writes of a contract period of five years, the information from Mexico amounts to five years. Giménez meanwhile indicated his transfer with a video on Twitter, in which Mexico City can be seen first before the picture fades in to Rotterdam. Before he left for the Netherlands, he spoke to media representatives at the airport about the change.

“I’m a little nervous, but I’m excited because I’m fulfilling a dream,” said Giménez. “It was difficult making the decision to leave Cruz Azul. It’s something that hurts me a lot. It’s very sad, but I also put God’s plans and my dreams first,” he said. Giménez, who trained at Cruz Azul, is making his first move of his career to Europe. “I’m very grateful to Cruz Azul because they gave me this chance that I wouldn’t have gotten at any other club,” said the attacking player, who has been part of the professional squad since 2019. He played a total of 104 games for the club, in which he contributed 20 goals and eleven assists. Last season, he recorded a market value plus of 2.5 million to currently 4 million euros. His performances recommended him for the Mexico national team, in which he made his debut in the fall and has made seven games (three goals) since then.

Noisy “Voetbal InternationalBoth clubs reached an agreement on the transfer last week. On Tuesday evening (local time) Giménez played one last game for Cruz Azul, who drew 0-0 at Atlético de San Luis. According to the report, it is still uncertain whether the striker can be used in the Eredivisie opener at Vitesse on Sunday (2:30 p.m.) as Feyenoord also have to apply for a work permit for him. Giménez will be the seventh signing in the current transfer period, during which Javairô Dilrosun (24) was brought in from Hertha BSC (overview).
