Happy news from Safari Park Beekse Bergen in Hilvarenbeek: a second elephant calf was born there on Sunday evening. The newborn elephant was actually noticed by a caregiver by chance.
The animal was born healthy, the park reports. At a quarter past eleven on Sunday evening, the healthy female named Ajabu was born. A month ago, the first African elephant calf, Mosi, was born.
Surprise
The moment of the birth was a surprise for the park. Head of animal care Yvonne Vogels suddenly saw the calf walking on Sunday evening when she checked the webcam to see if everything was okay with the herd, she says.
“After the arrival of the previous calf, Mosi, we keep an extra close eye on everything. On Sunday evening I looked at the webcam and I thought I saw little Mosi a bit unsteady on her legs. Not much later I saw Mosi and the youngest asset in view.”
African elephants are pregnant for an average of 22 months. That’s why the park expected the calf sometime in January. “But we are very happy that Ajabu was born healthy,” Vogels concludes.
