FSV request not complied with
Mainz attacker Jae-sung Lee was allowed 22 minutes in last Sunday’s Bundesliga duel with Borussia Mönchengladbach – and used this efficiently with an assist for Karim Onisiwo, whose equalizer secured a point in the Lower Rhine for FSV in the end. According to coach Bo Svensson, the fact that the ex-Kieler did not get more playing time was primarily due to his grueling international trip the previous week. The Dane practiced this criticism of the South Korean association.
Lee played the full distance in both the World Cup qualifier against Iran (2-0, 2 assists) and against the United Arab Emirates (0-1). In total, he had flown more than 20,000 kilometers during the trip. “Jae-Sung came from a corona infection. Everyone saw that he wasn’t at 100 percent against Bielefeld. We asked the South Korean federation to take it easy on Lee. They let him play more than 90 minutes twice,” Svensson is quoted as saying on “Kicker”.
South Korea was already definitely qualified for the World Cup before the two games. In Qatar, the team meets Portugal, Uruguay and Ghana in Group H.

In the catch-up game against FC Augsburg (from 6:30 p.m. in the TM live ticker) scheduled for Wednesday, Mainz could reduce the gap to sixth place, which entitles them to participate in international business, to three points with a win. It is unclear whether Lee’s fitness will allow him a place in the starting eleven, Svensson wants “to see who has power and freshness, just like other players in the English week.”
