MVV has provided a surprise in the away game against De Graafschap. The Maastricht club won 3-1 in Doetinchem. Goals from Toshio Lake before the break, a beauty from Remans and a beautiful goal from Blummel after the break, gave the Maastricht team of trainer Klaas Wels the three points.
This time, the MVV coach had a base spot in store for Mitchel Keulen and Marko Kleinen, which gave his team a little more body. Despite this, the people of Maastricht did not receive the points as a gift in Doetinchem.
Star bearers vs. Super farmers
Just like Wels, interim coach Jan Vreman of De Graafschap opted for a 4-2-3-1 formation. The club from Doetinchem is fighting for a place in the play-offs, where the people from Maastricht were penultimate. The home side attacked from minute one. MVV had to limit itself to defending and lurking on the counter. That worked early in the game. The first time MVV went on the attack, it was hit. On a pass from Orhan Dzepar, Toshio Lake scored with a ball over goalkeeper Jurjus and brought The Star Bearers ahead, 0-1. Nine minutes had been played.
Then it was the turn of The Super Farmers† Two minutes later Philip Brittijn, on a pass from Sam Hendriks, blasted the ball into the bottom of the bar: 1-1.
Peace
MVV was pushed back into its own half again and that gave De Graafschap a few opportunities. But most of the attempts lacked precision or were stopped by MVV goalkeeper Romain Matthys. There was a chance for Lake, but the MVV striker dropped too easily after being tapped lightly. That did not result in a penalty for Lake, but a yellow card (33′). Mart Remans had another excellent opportunity, but his effort from close range went straight to goalkeeper Hidde Jurjus. Jesse Schuurman missed the last big chance of the first 45 minutes and so halftime was reached with that 1-1 tie.
Scoring from own half
MVV started the 2nd half with the same eleven. But the first real danger was noted on the other side. Midfielder Schuurman hit the bar (50′). De Graafschap became stronger and also took a little more risk in the back.. De Graafschap had the upper hand, MVV remained dangerous through the counter. A foul on Dzepar in the 56th minute followed, but Remans saw that goalkeeper Hidde Jurjus was standing far in front of his goal and did not hesitate for a moment: from his own half he shot the ball over Jurjus into the goal. A beautiful goal for the attacker from Eygelshoven and MVV took the lead again: 1-2.
doubt
The deficit caused doubts at De Graafschap. Vreman answered with a double substitution. That did not produce the desired effect, absolutely not. It was MVV that increased the lead. On a pass from Toshio Lake, Sven Blummel scored against his old club. Fifteen minutes before the end, MVV led 3-1. The match seemed to derail for a moment (83 ‘) but referee Gerrets calmed the rebellion with yellow cards, one of which was for Remans. Despite the fact that there were still six minutes of injury time, MVV no longer really ran into problems. The team moves up one spot and is now 18th.
Party
In two weeks, in the first weekend of April, MVV will celebrate its 120th anniversary. With this victory, the team is getting a bit of color on the cheeks. The opponent on April 1 in an away game is Helmond Sport, the team that is currently last (but won against NAC 4-0). Before that, MVV will play a home game, and Almere City will be a guest in De Geusselt on Sunday 27 March.
