Beach volleyball World Cup: Ludwig/Lippmann with second victory in the second game

As of: October 9th, 2023 8:07 p.m

The beach volleyball players Clemens Wickler and Nils Ehlers moved into the knockout round of the World Cup in Tlaxcala, Mexico, without losing a set. Laura Ludwig and Louisa Lippmann suffered their first defeat, but their progression had already been determined.

The only German men’s duo in the title fights defeated the Americans Chaim Schalk/Tri Bourne 2-0 (22:20, 21:16) in their third preliminary round game on Monday. After a few problems in the first set, the two Hamburgers knew how to improve in the second round and ultimately celebrated an easy victory.

Ludwig/Lippmann continued despite defeat

The previously unbeaten Ludwig and Lippmann – like Ehlers/Wickler from Hamburg – suffered their first defeat against the combination Carolina Solberg/Barbara Seixas from Brazil with a score of 0:2 (19:21, 16:21). At the championship, which takes place at an altitude of around 2,400 meters, the European Championship third-place finishers Ludwig/Lippmann had already reached the round of the best 32 teams.

Müller/Tillmann and Ittlinger/Borger have to tremble

On Tuesday morning, the German champions Svenja Müller and Cinja Tillman (Hamburg) as well as Sandra Ittlinger and Karla Borger want to protect their chances of advancing. The Stuttgart women have to deal with the Mexican outsiders Katherine Albarran and Yamilet Vidaurrazaga (3 o’clock). Müller/Tillmann, the third-place finishers at the 2022 World Cup in Rome, will meet the Brazilians Taina Silva/Victoria Lopes (5 a.m.). The two German duos started the tournament with one win and one defeat each.

World champions have secured their Olympic ticket

48 teams each for women and men are fighting for the medals. The teams are divided into twelve preliminary round groups. The respective group winners and runners-up as well as the best four third-placed teams are qualified for the knockout round. The eight remaining third-placed teams compete against four other participants in a “lucky loser round”. The title holders are also qualified for the Olympic Games in Paris in 2024.
