New year, same champions: As in 2022, Svenja Müller and Cinja Tillmann as well as Nils Ehlers and Clemens Wickler from Hamburg secured the title at the German Beach Volleyball Championships in Timmendorfer Strand.
On Sunday evening, Ehlers/Wickler won the men’s final 2-0 (21:19, 21:18) against the twin brothers Bennet and David Poniewaz (Schuettorf). For Wickler it is already the sixth national championship title – Ehlers (two titles) is his fourth different partner. “It was a really tough game,” said Wickler. Bronze went to Paul Henning and Sven Winter from Düsseldorf, who defeated Lukas Pfretzschner/Robin Sowa (Hamburg) 2:1 (21:19, 16:21, 17:15) in the small final.
Borger/Ittlinger “only” third
The Müller/Tillmann duo, who train in Hamburg, had previously won the women’s final against Anna Behlen and Sarah Schulz (Kiel/Mainz) 2-0 (21:14, 21:15). Behlen/Schulz had surprisingly won in the semifinals against number two seeded Karla Borger and Sandra Ittlinger. After all, the Stuttgart duo took third place with a 21:18, 21:14 against Leonie Körtzinger/Lea Sophie Kunst (Varel/Hamburg).
Tillmann: “It just feels cool”
“If someone had told me that before the tournament, I would have taken it straight away,” said 32-year-old Tillmann. “It just feels cool.” Above all, she praised her partner, who was ten years her junior. “I’m just proud of Svenja’s development over the past two years,” said Tillmann. “It’s unbelievable what the young lady is doing.” The duo has been playing together since 2021 and has developed into the best German couple over time.
