Beach Middelkerke receives EC sand sculptures
The competition is part of the Sand Sculpture Festival, which makes ordinary sandcastles on the Belgian Middle Coast pale all summer long. That collection revolves around dinosaurs and the European Championship also goes back in time. The theme “The Origin of Everything” is the starting point for the artists and they have interpreted it broadly.
Chaos
Kuba Zimacek from the Czech Republic crawls into a time machine for his sculpture and travels thirteen billion years in the past. “It’s a mess. It is the beginning of everything from Greek mythology. Everything took shape and there was disorder and emptiness,” explains the artist.
Roman Shurubkin is from Ukraine and with his work supports his mother and brother who are still living at war in Kharkov. “I first wanted to do something about Vladimir Putin with a story about the devil, but not here,” Shurubkin said. “I talk about politics in other places. Children come here.”
The sand artists’ creations should be ready on Tuesday, but they will normally remain until the festival kicks off in September.
