Brouwer and Meeuwsen, placed third in the Italian capital, had made it to the last sixteen by beating their compatriots Christiaan Varenhorst and Steven van de Velde.
The 2013 world champions immediately took the lead (4-1) in the first set and kept a margin in the sequel. In the second set it was 6-0 in no time. Brouwer and Meeuwsen never saw that lead jeopardized and used their first match point at 20-13.
In the quarterfinals, the Dutch will face the Americans Chaim Schalk and Theodore Brunner on Friday, again at 10 p.m. Brouwer said he was counting on a good battle at Ziggo. ,,We have played against them twice in the past few weeks. Both times we won in a three-setter. We are going to make a good plan,” said Brouwer, who actually only experienced problems with the Italians at the end of the first set. “After that we said to each other: now the gas on it.”
Meeuwsen spoke of a tough opponent. ,,I’m happy with the way we won this game. We immediately showed that there was nothing to be gained. Hopefully we can continue this.”
The other four Dutch couples who reached the knockout stage of the World Cup were eliminated. Among them are the women’s couple Katja Stam and Raïsa Schoon, who were placed first in Rome but lost in the eighth finals on Thursday against Taliqua Clancy and Mariafe Artacho Del Solar from Australia.
