After victories in the first two competition matches, Be Quick 1887 suffered its first defeat of the season in Harderwijk on Saturday afternoon. The Groningen fourth division team lost 4-0 against VVOG.
VVOG was relegated from the third division last season. According to Be Quick coach Paul Matthijs, the experience of the home team was the deciding factor. “There is a difference between the third and fourth divisions,” said the coach. “Hoogeveen is also experiencing that at the moment. VVOG played one level higher last season. You noticed that at some moments during the match. They were sometimes just a little smarter than us. They also had a few experienced players on the field. We mainly played with boys aged 20 and younger.”
Difficulty holding the ball
Be Quick started the match well against VVOG on Saturday afternoon. Defensively, the Groningers gave nothing away. “There was some threat, but they didn’t create any opportunities,” said Matthijs. “But we didn’t create any offensive opportunities ourselves. We had trouble keeping the ball up front.”
After 40 minutes the home team took the lead. A corner kick was not cleared properly and after a mess in the penalty area, VVOG scored the 1-0. Shortly afterwards the home team doubled the score. Be Quick put pressure, forcing VVOG to play the long ball. Hugo Stoker wanted to head the ball back to his goalkeeper, but saw a quick attacker appear, who lobbed the ball over Be Quick’s closing post.
Adult team
After the break, Be Quick went looking for the tying goal, but the guests again hardly became dangerous. Twenty minutes before the end, VVOG ended the match by making it 3-0 from a counter. A blink of an eye later the 4-0 was also on the board.
“The previous match showed that we can hold onto a lead well. It now turned out that we are having difficulty making up the deficit. We created too little against a good, mature team,” was Matthijs’ conclusion.
Next week the Groningen team will play against TVC’28 from Tubbergen. The Tukkers were promoted from the first division last season and, like Be Quick, have six points from three matches.
