BCCs closed: staff do not feel safe due to aggressive bargain hunters

BCC closed all branches on Tuesday for staff safety. The bankruptcy sale of the electronics chain resulted in impatient, angry and even aggressive customers, inside and outside the store. The BCC in Breda also closed its doors earlier on Monday afternoon and was only open briefly on Tuesday.

The BCC in Breda is closed, but people regularly pass by, look inside and walk on. 23-year-old Daphne from Breda is just driving up. “I have a new apartment, I could use some cheaper stuff for that. Everything is so expensive these days,” she gives as a reason why she comes to bargain hunt. “I don’t think it will open yet. Shame.”

Beppie from Breda wanted to buy a discounted e-reader, but understands that the store is closed. “It’s just not right for people to act like that. But it’s a shame that I can no longer go there.” Bianca thinks so too. She wanted to ‘score’ something from Apple with a ten percent discount. “That’s not much, but it’s still a bonus.” Bianca also thinks it is a shame that the BCC is closing. “It was our regular store for electronics with great staff.”

“Four hundred euros discount, that’s worth it.”

At the closed BCC, Jeanine is waiting for a washing machine to be delivered. “I got a four hundred euro discount, which is worth it. I first wanted to buy a cheaper model, but now I have one with more options for the same price.” She also ordered a clothes dryer. “They said on Saturday that everything would still be delivered.” Fortunately, Jeanine has not yet paid for the white goods. “Just a little patience,” she hopes.

Marcel was working at the BCC in Breda on Monday and Tuesday to measure the building. “I have heard snippets of it and colleagues have also said a lot,” he says. “People were impatient inside, people outside didn’t want to wait. The atmosphere was rude to threatening. It went much further than a swear word.”

“We are in an ‘I’ society.”

He doesn’t understand why people react this way. “The staff will soon lose their jobs. They have a lot more work than usual, are super nice and still help you. Apparently that doesn’t matter.” According to Marcel, people have far too short fuses. “We are in an ‘I’ society. I also experience it in my work. But if you want to be helped respectfully, you must also behave respectfully yourself. Respect is a two-way street,” is his advice.

BCC went bankrupt at the end of last month. The trustees started a bankruptcy sale to get as much money as possible for the stocks the company still has. This already caused crowds last week, but did not yet cause any problems.

According to RTL Z the curators and management of BCC are currently working on a solution. For example, security staff may be hired to protect store employees. Then the shops could open again. That would be scheduled for Thursday at the earliest.
