In the last season of the Basketball Bundesliga, the Ludwigsburg giants spoiled the Würzburg Baskets’ entry into the play-offs. But nothing came of the hoped-for revenge in the new season: the Franconians suffered a clear defeat at home.
The Würzburg Baskets suffered the first setback of the new 2023/24 season on matchday 3 of the Basketball Bundesliga (BBL). There was a clear 60:78 defeat at home against the giants Ludwigsburg. Ludwigsburg had already defeated Würzburg twice last season – and even prevented Mainfranken from taking part in the play-offs.
After the biggest away win in history, the rough landing follows
Würzburg’s record against Ludwigsburg remains modest. In the 23rd game since 2011 there was already the 16th defeat. The Baskets were actually highly motivated after a strong start to the season.
The Würzburgers followed a 93:81 victory in the first round of the cup at the Karlsruhe Lions with a brilliant 88:58 at the Towers Hamburg in their first Bundesliga game of the season. And now the revenge against Ludwigsburg should follow.
Ludwigsburg prevented Würzburg from reaching the play-offs
On matchday 30 of last season, Würzburg still led by six points until two minutes before the end. A win – and the high-flyers from Franconia with the small budget would have opened the door to the play-offs. But Ludwigsburg fought back, scored with the final siren to win 81:78 and prevented the Baskets from making the play-offs.
Würzburg this time without a real chance
This time Würzburg was far from such a close result. The guests dominated the first quarter and pulled away to seven points. Würzburg was able to reduce the score to just two by halftime. But after the break, Ludwigsburg ran away with giant strides to a clear 78:60 victory.
