After his early exit in the race for a place in the squad for the European Basketball Championship, longtime national team captain Robin Benzing keeps fit with the second division Giessen 46ers. The 33-year-old is currently without a contract.
“The fact that Robin is training with us until further notice is a win-win situation for both sides. Of course, he increases our quality in training immensely and the young players can take a lot from him,” said managing director Sebastian Schmidt: “You should do more for the time being but don’t speculate on it.”
Benzing, who was last under contract with Fortitudo Bologna in Italy, is said to complete his training sessions in Gießen “for an indefinite period”.
National coach Gordon Herbert had removed the veteran from the squad for the home European Championship in mid-August. The new captain is Dennis Schröder, the man from Braunschweig will lead the team into the tournament against France (8:30 p.m. / MagentaSport) on Thursday.
