BBL is booming after World Cup gold: hall occupancy at record levels

The boom in basketball resulting from the World Cup title in Manila is noticeable in the Bundesliga (BBL). An average of 4,326 spectators have come to the 185 games so far, and the hall occupancy is almost 90 percent – a record. This emerges from the BBL’s half-time balance for the 58th season.

Alba Berlin currently has the highest average audience with 8,446 visitors, while the best occupancy was at EWE Baskets Oldenburg (100 percent). Every home game was sold out with 6,200 spectators. 32.44 percent of all game minutes in the first half of the season went to players with a German passport, which is just below the record from the previous season (33.65 percent).

In first place is the old and new cup winner Bayern Munich, who, thanks to their world champion trio (Andreas Obst, Isaac Bonga, Niels Giffey), gave more than half of the playing time to German players (51.10 percent).

The BBL media partner has been Dyn since this season and shows all matches live, and free live games have been running regularly on Sundays (5 p.m.) on the WELT television channel since January. For BBL managing director Stefan Holz, the change was worth it. “We are already seeing a significantly increased media presence through much more reporting and more content formats during the week,” said Holz.
