FC Bayern surprisingly announced on its website and via Twitter: “Manuel Neuer underwent successful surgery on his right knee on Sunday. FC Bayern will therefore have to do without their captain in the coming weeks.”
On Saturday evening, Neuer was still in goal in Bayern’s 3-2 win over Leipzig and had no discernible problems.
According to BZ information, the keeper underwent meniscus surgery and will be out for four to six weeks! It’s not an acute injury from the Leipzig game, Neuer has had knee problems for a long time. In the last few weeks he has repeatedly taken breaks from training and reduced the program.
The keeper had just matched Oliver Kahn’s record of victories (310 Bundesliga victories), and now Bayern have to plan without their captain.
In the coming games, including the first leg in the Champions League round of 16 at RB Salzburg on February 16, number 2 Sven Ulreich will be in goal. In 2017/18, “Ulle” Neuer represented almost a whole season and held up well. Nevertheless, the Neuer injury is of course very bad news for coach Julian Nagelsmann (34) and Bayern!
Sport director Hasan Salihamidzic (45): “All of us in the club and the whole team wish Manuel a good and quick recovery and we are sure that he will soon be in top shape with us again.”

Neuer himself spoke up via Instagram. On a photo from the hospital showing his thumbs up, Neuer writes: “Hey guys, I had a little surgery on my knee today. Everything went so well that I can start my advanced training in a timely manner. Keep your fingers crossed! See you very soon on the pitch.”
