Bayern Munich | Revealed: Tuchel rejected Cancelo’s return

Head coach Thomas Tuchel from FC Bayern complained after the end of the change period that the squad was too small. Apparently, he could have had a well-known full-back who already knows Munich very well: Joao Cancelo. But it is said to have been Tuchel who broke the deal.

Things got wild at FC Bayern on Deadline Day. In addition to the failed transfers of Joao Palhinha and Trevoh Chalobah or Armel Bella-Kotchap, the return of Joao Cancelo was suddenly an issue in Munich.

The Portuguese had not yet completed his move to FC Barcelona and was on hold. Several media reported unanimously that FC Bayern wanted to take advantage of the situation and were thinking of a return campaign.

Joao Cancelo was loaned out by Manchester City’s sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic for six months last winter. However, FC Bayern let the purchase option of 70 million euros expire and the 29-year-old went back to England. There he had no prospects under team manager Pep Guardiola and therefore insisted on saying goodbye again.

FC Bayern could have borrowed Cancelo again

As “Bild” now reveals, Cancelo could have landed a second time at Bayern. Those responsible in Munich discussed the personnel and exchanged views with coach Thomas Tuchel. Accordingly, it was possible to snatch Cancelo from FC Barcelona on Deadline Day and loan him out again.

But although Tuchel is said to have initially agreed, he rejected the deal after consulting his coaching team.

Ultimately, FC Bayern was unable to sign another defender. Only Noussair Mazraoui and Bouna Sarr are available for right-back. Bayern had previously sold Benjamin Pavard to Inter and loaned Josip Stanisic to Bayer Leverkusen.
