The 34th match day of the Bundesliga was all about farewells for many clubs. Niklas Süle celebrated his at Bayern last week. In Wolfsburg, the upcoming BVB professional was not part of the Munich squad – because he refused to travel with the team.
A use of Süle in the game of FC Bayern against VfL Wolfsburg was not really planned. “We had actually planned to fill the squad completely and take players with us who will also be there next year,” explained coach Julian Nagelsmann why he originally wanted to do without the central defender.
However, a training injury to Marcel Sabitzer still freed up a place in the squad. Nagelsmann offered Süle this place, but the upcoming BVB professional refused.
“We asked him if he still wanted to go, but he then said not really, because he hadn’t prepared for it now. That’s why we left him at home,” said Nagelsmann, who, looking at Süle, had a “difficult emotional state ” spoke.
Süle closes the chapter FC Bayern
With Sule’s renunciation of the trip to Wolfsburg, the not always easy chapter FC Bayern for the national player ends. In his five years on the Isar, the central defender was repeatedly thrown back by injuries. To do this, he had to put up with regular criticism from his own ranks. Not infrequently, it was about his physical fitness, which was denounced by those responsible.
In the end, Süle’s farewell was not without noise. The defense attorney’s advisor cited a lack of appreciation as a reason for the change. The longtime Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge replied sharply: “Appreciation is a unit called the euro – nothing else.”
