Bayern Munich | Matthäus settles accounts with stars: “This is not a team”

The German soccer record champions FC Bayern Munich has handed over the lead in the Bundesliga to BVB. After the bitter bankruptcy at Mainz 05 (1: 3), it is no longer just criticism of the club’s management, the stars of FC Bayern are also counted.

A few games before the end of the season, FC Bayern is threatened with a sporting super meltdown: a season without a single title. With Borussia Dortmund’s convincing 4-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt, Bayern Munich now have to hope that their rivals will slip up in the next five Bundesliga games if they are to become champions after all.

The alarm bells have been ringing on Säbener Strasse since the defeat in Mainz, as Bayern, under new head coach Thomas Tuchel, have already lost their chances of winning the DFB Cup and the Champions League in previous games. However, the crisis at FC Bayern has reached a new high after the fourth Bundesliga bankruptcy this season.

Record international player Lothar Matthäus has therefore now focused on the FC Bayern players. “It’s wrong in the front and in the back,” said the TV expert on “Sky” on Saturday. Matthäus saw an “underground” performance from Bayern against Mainz, especially in the second half.

“That was bad, there wasn’t the fighting spirit, there wasn’t the will,” Matthäus said, “It’s not a team.”

At Bayern, everything must now be questioned, said the 62-year-old. It is obvious that the move from Nagelsmann to Tuchel “didn’t do anything in the end”. “And maybe certain positions in the club will then be changed – not just on the pitch.”

Matthäus: Kahn has to question himself – BVB “like a worthy champion”

In doing so, Matthäus was alluding to the management team at FC Bayern, headed by President Herbert Hainer, CEO Oliver Kahn and sports director Hasan Salihamidzic. Most recently, Kahn was the focus of criticism.

“He will question himself. He certainly enjoyed doing it. But he certainly didn’t expect this thunderstorm over Munich. It was all very successful in previous years,” Matthäus explained: “If it’s too much for him , he may decide to himself that he doesn’t need it. I think Oliver underestimated a thing or two as well.”

BVB’s performance in the home game against Eintracht Frankfurt convinced the TV experts “both in front and behind”. “In the first half I saw one or two wobbles. It was a performance by a worthy champion. They have to play the last five games like that. That’s BVB’s big task now.”
